In a pioneering clinical trial, Alzheimer's patients experienced remarkable reversal of degenerative memory loss due to a groundbreaking medical regimen. For a hundred years, treatments to benefit Alzheimer's patients were unsuccessful, leaving patients facing neurological degeneration and limited benefits of palliative care. However, a new treatment regimen has revolutionized Alzheimer's therapy. An experimental group of ten patients followed a comprehensive and personalized regimen aimed at reversing their memory loss. The astonishing result was that nine of the ten patients benefited from the treatment, with their memory capabilities enhanced within the first three to six months.
Patient Profiles: The Impact of Memory Loss
Of the nine patients who benefited, six had severe issues which had negatively impacted their work or had caused them to quit their jobs. However, all of them were able to return to their work or improve their work quality after treatment. The long-term clinical trial has affirmed that, 2.5 years after the first treatment, all patients retained their memory therapy benefits. The patients had varying forms of degenerative memory loss, including Subjective Cognitive Impairment, Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment, and Alzheimer's Disease. While the personalized treatment successfully reversed early stages of Alzheimer's disease, it was ineffective for one patient who had significantly progressed Alzheimer's disease.
First-of-its-kind Comprehensive Therapeutic Approach
This remarkable clinical research trial was conducted by the Buck Institute for Research on Aging and the UCLA Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research. Unlike past studies, these results indicated that neurological health and memory could be retained and improved through a comprehensive 36 point therapy regimen. Treatment aspects included: Medications, Supplements, Sleep Optimization, Physical Activity, Mental Stimulation, and an optimized Diet.
Inconclusive Success of Single Drug Treatment
Decades of attempts to find a pharmaceutical cure for Alzheimer's Disease and its related memory degeneration have been futile. There are a few drugs that marginally mitigate symptoms, but none have been successful in altering the course of the disease or slowing its progression. Over the past decade, more than a billion dollars have been expended worldwide seeking Alzheimer's treatments, with multiple clinical trials producing minimal tangible benefits.
Reshaping Understanding and Approach to Alzheimer's Treatment
Recent Alzheimer's Disease research has revolutionized our understanding of this condition. It is apparent that alongside genetics, various other factors also impact how Alzheimer's Disease manifests and progresses. Fulfilling treatment may require tapping into potential synergies of different treatments attacking different aspects of the disease.
Treatments Synergize, Yielding Promising Results
Dr. Dale Bredesen of the University of California Los Angeles led this study and was published in the academic journal, Aging. Preliminary results demonstrated that combining treatment options into a synergistic program can produce definitive results for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. While past studies have failed, Bredesen has found promising results in his combination therapies.
Lifestyle Changes Integral to Alzheimer's Treatment
Clinical research by Dr. Bredesen suggests that the primary cause of Alzheimer's Disease is a malfunction in nerve cell interactions that form memories, leading to the deterioration of important memories. While comprehensive therapy is complex and demanding, even limited adherence to the therapy has proven effective. Optimization of physical health is an ancillary benefit of this therapeutic regimen, with improvements in overall health and body composition.
Future Research Directions
On the strength and promise of this singular study’s success, future research should explore these questions: Can the treatment reverse Alzheimer's disease deep into cognitive decline? How long-term are the results? How much improvement can the average patient expect? Is effectiveness influenced by a patient's family history of Alzheimer's disease?
Alzheimer’s - An Urgent Epidemic
Alzheimer's disease is an urgent global issue affecting almost 5.5 million elderly patients in America and more than thirty million worldwide. Without a cure or an effective preventative treatment, Alzheimer's treatment costs could bankrupt Medicare. Today, it ranks as the third leading cause of mortality in the United States, just behind cancer and cardiovascular disease. At the intersection of extending lifespans and the enhanced treatment of diseases such as cancer and heart conditions, Alzheimer's prevalence continues to increase. Treating or preventing Alzheimer’s disease is paramount in current medical research.
